Year 1
Our class teacher is Mrs Senescall, and our lovely teaching assistants are Mrs Wright and Miss Speigl.
It is a busy term in year one as we settle into new routines and learn to be much more independent in our learning!
In phonics, we are revisiting phases two, three and four to ensure that we are ready to start phase 5! We will be doing lots of mini-phonics sessions and reading lots of words and sentences. We are working on our handwriting and making sure that we form each letter correctly.
Our English unit is based around the book Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson. We will be making our own cave paintings and will learn about some prehistoric animals such as woolly mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers! By the end of the unit, we will be using all of our writing skills to write a letter to the cave babies' parents!
Our maths unit focusses on our numbers to 10 this term. We will be making sure that we can count accurately, recognise numbers and order them. We will be doing lots of work counting carefully and recording our numbers correctly. We will move onto recognising numbers and words and representing numbers in different ways.
The science unit for this term is the human body!! We will be naming basic body parts and exploring whether the tallest children have the biggest feet. We will have to use all of our scientific skills to investigate this!
Our art unit has already started exploring lines to create art. Year 1 will explore the work of Bridget Riley and Wassily Kandinsky. This will help us to develop our own artwork using our new knowledge of different sorts of lines. Our final piece will be an observational drawing and it will have an autumnal feel!
We are excited about our geography unit this term as it is all about our amazing school! We will be looking at the surrounding area in relation to where we live. It will be great to do lots of field work to help us learn more!
Our PE lessons will focus on learning basic skills such as balancing, travelling and using space. PSHE will cover family and we will learn how all families are unique!
Our PE days will be Monday and Friday. Please come to school wearing your PE kit. We do not have forest school this term.
We will send your child home every Friday with a reading book and a shared book. They need to read their reading book for a minimum of three times per week. The share book is for you to enjoy together as a bedtime story. These books need to be returned the following Friday to be changed. We may also send home additional sounds, words and activities to support your child. As always, if you have any questions please speak to me, and we can get it sorted. Homework will go out on a Friday and needs to be returned the following week. This is a brilliant opportunity to get an idea of the sorts of things that your child is learning and for them to revisit learning.
